Sizzlin' Summer

GOOD AFTERNOON! MONDAY was Memorial Day, which means that according to Indignity's publishing tradition, it should be time for our seasonal transition from FOOD FRIDAYS to SUMMER FRIDAYS. However! Today is also the last weekday in the month of May, which means we are also due to present our monthly GETTY IMAGES ROUNDUP.

To keep you, the readers, supplied with visually appealing, topically appropriate, and legally licensed images in our newsletters, Indignity maintains a paid subscription to the Getty Images service. Because even the lowest available tier of the Getty plan still offers more photos and illustrations than we generally use, and because we want to make sure all of us get our full money's worth, at the end of each month we prepare a bonus collection of images to keep using up our annual allotment at the appropriate rate.

In tribute to the convergence of FOOD FRIDAY, SUMMER FRIDAY, and the conclusion of another month, we present our end-of-May photographic roundup, organized around the thematic keyword GRILL.

Woodblock print depicting a mother namazu chasing a mob of people who have kidnapped her two children, with the message on the flag suggesting they intend to GRILL and eat the young catfish. The Namazu, also called the Onamazu, is a creature in Japanese mythology and folktales. The Namazu is a gigantic catfish said to cause earthquakes and tremors. Living in the mud under the Japanese isles, the Namazu is guarded by the protector god Kashima, who restrains the catfish using the kaname-ishi rock. Whenever Kashima lets his guard down, Namazu thrashes about and causes violent earthquakes. The Namazu rose to new fame and popularity after the Ansei great earthquakes that happened near Edo in 1855. This led to the Namazu being worshipped as a god of world rectification (yonaoshi daimyojin), sent by the gods to correct some of the imbalances in the world. Catfish woodblock prints known as namazu-e became their own popular genre within days of the earthquake. They were usually unsigned and often depicted scenes of a namazu or many namazu atoning for their deeds. They were quickly squashed by the Tokugawa Shogunate, the prints censored and destroyed, with only a handful surviving to this day. WEATHER REVIEWS

New York City, May 29, 2025

★★★ The showers stuck around long after their scheduled morning departure, and even after they'd left, the day stayed soggy and dim. Boots or umbrellas or both stood outside apartment doors. Another umbrella, full-length and not visibly damaged, lay furled on the sidewalk by the curb. Bright beads of water lingered on the clover in the Park after other plants on the ground had gone dry. The air was exactly cool enough to keep the dampness from feeling unpleasant. The dogs out for the obligatory dog-walking hour seemed to be enjoying themselves regardless of the gloom. The clouds trapped and held the clatter of a helicopter, almost drowning out the overlaid shimmering rattle of newly fledged baby starlings calling after an adult as they followed it across the grass. When it was time to cook dinner, the sun quickly and totally broke through, sending warmth and light along the streets and into the living room: the long, fine evening of some other, much nicer, day.
