Last Call for Cheap Coffee

Fragment of a chyron from a news show: RETAIL COFFEE TARIFFS
TARIFF is real, it's on the TV news.

WE DRINK A lotta coffee in my house, and any time I go to the grocery store I keep my eyeballs peeled for deals. The Tim Horton's and Eight O'Clock bags up on top in the featured image are the last gasp of cheapo coffee I think we're gonna see for a while. Thanks, Trump tariff!

Back in the good old days when we had the economic latitude, we didn't go for these brands, no offense, my wife is the true coffee drinker, I don't care, I will drink Dunkin Donuts coffee. As a Household, we went for local brand Zeke's, and macro-bean stuff like Peets, Starbucks, and Café Bustelo, but now it's all about relative Value! What time is it? Well, at my local supermarket, it's lookin' like Eight O'Clock.

Which brings me to this deal from September and I will remember it fondly, as the steam rises off my freshly brewed cuppa Café Tariff that I see in my immediate future, some COSTCO Kirkland Supremo Ground Budget-Roast-Whatever cut with chicory and pencil shavings, urgh.

So here is (was) happy™ coffee! Marked down from $15.99, such a deal.

Lowercase "happy" coffee, 75% off, priced to move!

I am being all romantic about the Deal. As far as the coffee went, the preliminary verdict from my wife was: “Smells like Folgers. Looks like Folgers,” and it didn't get better after brewing a pot and drinking a cup. Even for me, it was an unsatisfying experience, thin. I feel bad about it, because this stuff was apparently a product in partnership for mental health, but the market decided it was a closeout.

Back label: here to help we've partnered with NAMI, the largest mental health organization in the US, to provide meaningful support wherever you are. if you or someone you know needs help, please call 800-950-NAMI or visit NAMl.org. together, we can make things better. NAMI National Alliance on Mental Illness
The container was very future/not-coffee, smooth plastic, rounded corners, with a foil seal.

I think I'm done with coffee from my local market for awhile. COSTCO is looking like the place to buy the beans right now, probably because they have a cushion of big-box inventory.

Prices on the COSTCO site for a store near Baltimore, MD. Peet's: $21.99 for 2 lbs., Kirkland Signature Columbian Supremo Coffee, Whole Bean, $22.49 for 3 lbs., Lavazza Caffé Espresso Arabica Whole Bean $22.99 for 2.2 lbs., Kirkland House Blend Whole Bean $19.39 for 2.5 lbs.

If you are an urban dweller, it might be time to look beyond the city line to the price clubs for Trump Tariff–delayed java prices while they last.

WEATHER REVIEWS

A patch of clear medium-deep blue sky.

New York City, October 16, 2025

★★★★ Silver accents on the dawn sky were succeeded by pure blue. Leaves took flight from the subway grate, rose a story or two, and came spinning or tumbling back down. Brick in Midtown looked precise and glass looked bleary. It felt urgent to get out of the shade and absorb the direct warmth. A crushed plastic beverage lid gleamed on the pavement like a solid metal benchmark.
