MR WRONG: Manifested destiny
Indignity Vol. 5, No. 146
Have you ever had anybody die and leave you money? Are you thinking about Death and who you might leave some money to? If I was rich I would have a big list of people to whom I would leave money, to. Or is that one of those things like “the reason Billionaires are rich is because they don’t give anybody their money,” but I’m talking about dead Billionaires!

WEATHER REVIEWS

Blue sky with a wave- or shark-fin-shaped arrangement of loose-knit wispy clouds rising from the bottom right corner of the frame and curving toward the middle.

New York City, August 14, 2025

★★ The waterfall into the Loch was louder than usual. A bit of sun got through the clouds, but not enough to burn the dampness from the overnight storms off the pavement, especially with the humidity leaving nowhere for it to evaporate to. A faint, sparse drizzle started falling or maybe just being squeezed out of the air, with no appreciable darkening of the similarly sparse cloud cover. The drizzle started speckling the t-shirt even as diffused solar heat built up on the open walk by the North Meadow ballfields and a sweat broke out. How many different ways was it possible to be getting slightly damp at the same time? Two hours later the drizzle was gone and so were most of the clouds. Something very close to full sun fell on the ballfields, and now the puddles were dwindling inside their wet margins. The water that slopped on the balcony during a late afternoon plant watering vanished shortly after, as if the concrete had been dry all along.

SANDWICH RECIPES DEP'T.

WE PRESENT INSTRUCTIONS in aid of the assembly of sandwiches selected from 365 Chafing-Dish Recipes : A Chafing-Dish Recipe for Every Day of the Year, published by George W. Jacobs & Company in 1912and available at archive.org for the delectation of all.

Oysters Grilled.

Wash 1 pint of large oysters, pick them from the liquor and drain as dry as possible. Put them in the well heated blazer and as fast as liquor drains from them, remove it with a spoon. When the oysters are dry and plump they are ready to serve. Before taking from the pan, dust with pepper and salt and add 2 tablespoonfuls of butter. Serve between saltine wafers, sandwich fashion.

Sandwich Sauté.

Cut bread in thin slices, remove the crusts, spread with a mixture of soft cheese moistened with cream to a spreading consistency, and seasoned with salt and paprika. Put the slices together and sauté them quickly in hot butter in the blazer.

Lemon Butter.

The juice and grated rind of 3 lemons, 3 well-beaten eggs, 2 cupfuls of sugar, 1 scant cupful of water, and 1 level teaspoonful of butter. Beat well together and cook in the hot-water pan five minutes or until it is thick. This is delicious spread between slices of bread for a sandwich or as a filling to put on sponge drops, or lady fingers.
