WEATHER REVIEWS

A patch of blue sky with the left side of the frame, angling down to the middle of the bottom, occupied by a sheet of thin white cloud separating into ridges.

New York City, July 7, 2025

★★ The departed rain had left humidity that filled the stairwell. The high remaining clouds did nothing to blunt the sun, and the gusts of breeze just moved the hot dampness around. Clover blossoms spread widely over the crown of the Great Hill. Children in purple CAMP JUPITER shirts were sword-fighting with padded rods while one of their number sat off to the side, facing away, knees up under a book. The clouds recovered enough to start blocking the heat, and kept going until the sun was a white spot and not even a round one. The smell of garbage in bloom hung over the sidewalks, even where there was no garbage in sight.

OUTSIDE READINGS DEP'T.

Marisa Kabas continued her tour of the gutted federal government by reporting on how the depleted Federal Emergency Management Agency is—or isn't—responding to the deadly Texas flash flooding:

Despite Trump officially activating FEMA on Sunday, FEMA has just 86 total staff deployed at this point, according to figures shared with staff Monday evening. That includes a national incident management team, plus regional and headquarter staff. In the past it would normally be in the several hundreds at this point in the disaster recovery process.

Rusty Foster wrote about fixing up his house and remembering the Stephen King novella "Apt Pupil" and watching the equivalents of King's fictional Nazi-enthusiast teenager tighten their control on the country

What Would You Do? I would carefully scrub the accumulated decades of grease off the old paint with TSP, making sure to rinse well so as not to leave a residue that hampers adhesion by the new paint. I would cut in with a 2 ½“ angled brush around all the window and door trim. I would listen to podcasts while I shuffled along the baseboard on my knees, pausing occasionally to stretch my aching back. I would make hot dogs for lunch and eat them while reading posts on Bluesky about the passage of a bill through Congress that will ramp ICE funding up to levels competitive with other countries' entire military. I would text my wife in New Zealand that things back home are pretty bad, and I don’t know what to do.
