I HAVE NO idea whether the actual words in my history bear it out or not, but it felt to me as if when I sit down to think up a starter word, my eye naturally drifts to the upper right of the letter layout, and I always start by considering what's up there. Lots of words with P in them. So this time I forced my gaze to the left and a little down. How about WAXEN? No, an X would be stupid. WAVER. Nothing but a green A, so back to the upper right again. PAINT: My old friend P turned green alongside the A, and the T came up yellow. So the T would have to move over, and another vowel would have to go on the far side of it. PARTY was a perfect fit: green, green, gray, green, green. Right reasoning, wrong answer. PATTY. An inferior word, a weak double letter, a flattening experience.
