MR WRONG: Here's an Illustrated Guide to Finally Being Able to Send Indignity Your Subscription Dollars, Should You Choose To

LAST WEEK IN the Mr. Wrong column, I was thankful for all the generosity of the Gentle Readers in terms of tips and donations for Indignity.

MR WRONG: Tips? Tops!
Indignity Vol. 6, No. 74

Generous donator/tipper Dave B wrote about wanting to pay annually, rather than à la carte. We have been having a problem with that, because we paused subscription billing at our last institutional transition, when our previous editor (now editor emeritus) got a full-time job, and then we invited people to take out new paid subscriptions to the new version but it turned out they couldn't, the system would just tell people that they already had an active paid subscription, because of how this thing called STRIPE works [Ed. note: Specifically, you sign up for a subscription on our platform, Ghost, but Stripe is what collects the money for Ghost, and Stripe was where we had put the pause on the subscription billing. So Stripe was (and still is) collecting $0 from our faithful prior subscribers, and from Ghost's point of view, that meant (and means) they were still active subscribers, all paid up].

So we had to make something else to subscribe to, a whole new subscription category or subscription tier or whatever, and that is available now, under the name INDIGNITY NEXT.

And so IF YOU ALREADY HAD A PAID SUBSCRIPTION, we have not been billing you, so if you want to go back to being a paid supporter of Indignity, we need you to please sign up for INDIGNITY NEXT!

I made an Educational and Informational Graphic for this, to show which options to click on and which one not to click on:

PLEASE SIGN UP FOR INDIGNITY NEXT!

Also we made a BUTTON to take you to the thing where you do the stuff.

Thank you for your kind attention and support of Indignity!

OK, look, I am going to file another, non-BUSINESS DEP'T.-type of Mr. Wrong column tomorrow (Friday), because my head hurts from thinking about this stuff, but meanwhile, last week the above-mentioned Dave B broke us off a little something, and also suggested I take eight bucks and buy some scratch-offs, which I did, and I won six bucks!

The way I play scratch-offs, though, I play to win BIG, so I am gonna re-invest my winnings in The System. Stay tuned!

Satarupa J, who tipped us five bucks (thanks!), writes "I enjoy reading your column/newsletter. I really loved the "It's still summer" post. I quoted it to my coworkers and wore capris to work even when it was getting chilly here in Seattle. I think your descriptions of the New York sky are sheer poetry!"

WEATHER REVIEWS

A patch of featureless gray sky, with here or there the shadow of a raindrop.

New York City, September 27, 2026

★ The dire storm of the forecast was a gurgling sound in the morning: plain soaking rain, no more than that, though the wind that went with it rattled the bathroom door deep inside the apartment. The window screens were wetted and the newspaper was soggy again. The faintest of fog seemed to hang below the featureless gray sky. The temperature had crept enough that, with the overwhelming humidity, there was not even the satisfaction of bundling up against a real chill. The water in the puddles was clear, with dark sediment clumping at the bottom. Drips heavier than the raindrops plopped on the expanses of standing water by the park benches. More dripping, fast and steady, echoed in a downspout.

A patch of sky with medium-light gray clouds hanging down to brush the bottom of the frame, where there's otherwise a patch of a more bluish gray or a gray thin enough to let some blue show through..

New York City, September 28, 2026

★ Two men walked along side by side, one under a clear umbrella, the other with his hood up and a huge umbrella scabbarded over his shoulder in his backpack. The rain petered out finally, after days of abating and returning. A yellow leaf caught some stronger piece of the now-diminished wind and went fluttering along the street head-high, almost exactly like a butterfly. The ground was so wet it smelled as if the earth had been turned over for gardening. Water ran smooth and high to the falls and then plunged to the head of the Loch to lie blotched with waxy-looking foam. Green leaves and golden ones alike lay beaten to slime on the pavement. A lone jogger crunched wetly around the cinders; a black squirrel arched its tail above the grass and nosed around. The sunflowers raised their black, petal-stripped heads. Some other flowers still gave off scent into the wet and bee-less air. Edgeless shapes of blue and peach appeared overhead, as if the sky might be relenting at last.

SANDWICH RECIPES DEP'T.

WE PRESENT INSTRUCTIONS for the assembly of sandwiches selected from Household Jewels; or, Ready Ways to Do Things; A Collection of Most Practical Useful and Valuable Recipes, Formulas and Suggestions for Every Occasion, collated and edited by H.G. Cutler, published in 1903 and now available at archive.org for the delectation of all.

Breakfast Sandwiches.— Toast ten very thin slices of bread and butter them. Build the toast in sandwich form by placing a slice of broiled bacon between two slices of the toast. Mince one cupful of cooked beef or chicken quite fine and heat it in two cupfuls of seasoned gravy or cream sauce. Mask the top of the sandwiches with this and serve on warm breakfast plates.

Indian Sandwiches.— To two parts of cooked veal or chicken allow one part of cold boiled tongue, and to each cupful of the mixture, measured after putting through a chopper, add one tablespoonful of melted butter, one teaspoonful of essence of anchovy and one-half teaspoonful of lemon juice; butter and cut the bread as directed, toast each slice golden brown, spread with the filling while hot and put together. Serve cold.

Mushroom Sandwiches.— Mix with one cup of boiled, chopped button mushrooms the same quantity of cold cooked tongue, which has been chopped fine; season with one-half teaspoonful of salt, dress with French mustard. Spread between thin slices of buttered brown bread lined with crisp lettuce leaves and put together in pairs.

A Fine Sandwich is made by spreading finely chopped dates between slices of bread which have been buttered and prepared as for any other sandwich. Another style of sandwich is made after this recipe: Make a dough with one cup of sugar, one-half cup of butter, one cup of sour cream, one egg and flour enough to make a dough which can be rolled thin. Roll this dough into two sheets. Cover one with split dates, place the other on top and press firmly together. Cut into fancy shapes and bake in a quick oven. Ice if desired.

If you are inspired to prepare a sandwich inspired by our continued offerings, be sure to send along a description of your experience and maybe a few photos to us here: indignity@indignity.net.
